Rugs from the Senneh Region of Iran
 
The countryside surrounding the historic city of Senneh (modern-day Sanandaj) has long been home to talented Kurdish weavers who produce some of Iran's most refined and distinctive handmade rugs. While the city of Senneh is celebrated for its exceptionally fine weaving and intricate designs, the villages throughout the surrounding region create carpets that blend this elegance with a more rustic, tribal character.
 
Rugs woven near Senneh are typically crafted from high-quality wool and are admired for their dense knotting, crisp geometric detail, and balanced compositions. Many feature the famous Herati (Fish) pattern, repeating boteh motifs, stylized floral medallions, or all-over field designs inspired by centuries of Persian artistic tradition. The rich color palettes often include deep indigo blues, warm brick reds, soft ivory, walnut browns, and subtle greens, many of which were traditionally achieved using natural vegetable dyes.
 
Unlike many urban workshop rugs, village-made Senneh-area carpets often display slight variations in color known as abrash, a hallmark of hand-dyed wool that adds warmth, depth, and individuality to every piece. Their combination of precise craftsmanship and authentic village artistry makes each rug truly one of a kind.
