Identifying Moth Damage
Moth larvae are one of the biggest hidden threats to Oriental rugs, especially those made from natural fibers like wool or silk. While adult moths don’t feed on rugs, their larvae do—and that’s where the damage happens.
The larvae hatch from eggs laid by female moths in dark, undisturbed areas of the rug, often under furniture, in folds, or in spots with little foot traffic. They are attracted to natural fibers like wool because of the protein found in animal-based hair. The larvae chew through the fibers, creating irregular holes, thinning patches, and weakened areas in the rug’s pile and foundation. Over time, this feeding can lead to significant structural damage, bald spots, or fraying.
Moth larvae also leave behind silken tubes or cases that cling to the fibers, along with a gritty residue of droppings, which can be a telltale sign of infestation. Since they prefer undisturbed environments, rugs stored away or rarely moved are particularly vulnerable.
