Custom 6'6"x9'6" Carpet

From Digital Design to Hand-Knotted Masterpiece

Modern - Repeating Field

What you see here is a computer-assisted design (CAD) created specifically for the production of a custom hand-knotted wool rug in India. This digital blueprint serves as the foundation for the entire weaving process, allowing every detail—pattern, color placement, and scale—to be planned with precision before a single knot is tied.

Using advanced design software, we work closely with our customers to custom-design each rug from the ground up. From subtle color adjustments to complete pattern revisions and exact sizing, every element is tailored to reflect the client’s personal style, space, and vision. This process ensures that the finished rug is not only beautiful but perfectly proportioned for its intended environment.

Once approved, the design is translated knot-by-knot and handed to skilled artisans in India, who bring the digital concept to life using hand-spun wool and traditional hand-knotting techniques passed down through generations. The result is a one-of-a-kind rug that combines modern design precision with timeless craftsmanship.

This seamless blend of technology and tradition allows us to create truly bespoke rugs—designed for you, woven by hand, and made to last for generations.

Where Color Begins: Inside India’s Time-Honored Wool Dyeing Tradition

The process of dyeing wool in India is a time-honored craft that blends generations of knowledge with careful attention to detail. Before any wool reaches the loom, it is thoroughly washed to remove natural oils and impurities, allowing the fibers to absorb dye evenly. Skilled dyers then prepare color baths using either traditional natural dyes or high-quality, colorfast modern dyes, depending on the desired aesthetic and performance of the finished rug. Each batch is measured with precision, as even slight variations in temperature, timing, or dye concentration can affect the final shade.

The wool is slowly immersed and gently agitated to ensure consistent saturation, then left to simmer so the color bonds deeply with the fibers. This slow process creates rich, layered tones rather than flat or artificial color. Once dyed, the wool is rinsed multiple times and laid out to dry—often under the open air and sun—allowing the fibers to set naturally and develop subtle variations in tone known as abrash.

This careful dyeing process is essential to the beauty and longevity of a hand-knotted rug. Properly dyed wool produces vibrant colors, a soft hand, and lasting stability, ensuring the finished rug ages gracefully and retains its character for generations.

A Rug in Its Most Authentic Stage

What you’re seeing here is a custom hand-knotted rug in the midst of its creation in India—a rare glimpse into one of the most important stages of the weaving process. On the right side of the rug, the pile appears thick, fuzzy, and slightly uneven, which is exactly how a finely woven rug should look while still on the loom.

At this stage, every knot has just been tied by hand and left intentionally long. The pile has not yet been cut down, leveled, or shaved, allowing the weavers to focus on precision, density, and structural integrity rather than surface refinement. This raw texture is a sign of craftsmanship, not imperfection—it reflects the thousands of individual knots that give the rug its depth, durability, and luxurious feel.

Once the rug is fully woven and cut from the loom, it will undergo a careful finishing process. The pile will be expertly sheared and sculpted, revealing crisp patterns, enhanced color clarity, and a smooth, even surface. What begins as a soft, uneven field of wool is transformed into a refined, finished rug designed to last for generations.

This is the beauty of true hand-knotted craftsmanship: every rug tells a story, and this moment captures it before the final reveal.

Fresh Off the Loom: A Rug in Its Rawest Form

This hand-knotted rug has just been cut from the loom, marking the completion of the weaving process and the beginning of its final transformation. At this stage, the rug appears rough, dusty, and uneven, which is a completely natural and expected part of traditional hand-knotting.

During months of weaving, the rug remains under constant tension on the loom. Once released, the foundation relaxes, and the pile—left intentionally long—looks soft, fuzzy, and irregular. Traces of wool fibers, loom dust, and workshop debris are visible on the surface, offering a clear sign that the rug has not yet been altered or finished.

At this point, the design is fully formed, but its refinement is still to come. The rug will next undergo a multi-step finishing process, including careful washing, controlled stretching, detailed pile shearing, and final inspection. These steps reveal the clarity of the pattern, balance the pile height, enhance color definition, and bring out the rug’s true character.

This “off-the-loom” appearance is a hallmark of authentic hand-knotted craftsmanship. It represents a rug at its most honest stage—before polishing, before perfection—where the skill of the weaver and the integrity of the materials are fully intact, waiting to be refined into a finished piece designed to last for generations.

Fully Finished: A Hand-Knotted Rug Revealed

This custom hand-knotted wool rug has now completed its final finishing process, revealing the true beauty and precision of the craftsmanship. After being carefully shaved, thoroughly washed, and professionally finished, the surface is smooth, even, and luxuriously soft, allowing the design to emerge with remarkable clarity.

The pile has been expertly leveled to create a refined texture while preserving depth and richness underfoot. The once-subtle details of the pattern are now crisp and balanced, with clean transitions between colors and a consistent field that reflects the weaver’s precision. The washing process has gently removed excess fibers and loom residue, enhancing color vibrancy and giving the wool a natural luster.
